Abortion is one option for an unplanned pregnancy, but like any medical procedure, it involves certain risks.

Before making a pregnancy decision, you should learn about all your options. And if you have had an abortion, it’s crucial to understand the warning signs of an infection so you can receive prompt medical treatment.

What to Watch for After an Abortion

Depending on the abortion procedure you have, you may experience different signs of infection. It is crucial to know what to look for after either procedure.

A medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy and has been FDA-approved through ten weeks of gestation. You will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding after taking the drugs, and these side effects can be severe in some cases.

Signs of an infection after a medical abortion include:

  • A fever lasting more than 24 to 48 hours
  • An unpleasant vaginal odor

If you have a surgical abortion, which typically uses suctioning and/or surgical tools to end the pregnancy, you can have mild cramping and spotting or light bleeding for a few days afterward.

Signs of an infection after a surgical abortion include:

  • Fever
  • Unusual or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Pain (i.e., severe abdominal cramps)

If you are experiencing concerning physical changes or worsening side effects after an abortion procedure, you should always seek immediate medical treatment.
